Sony Xperia 5 Comes with Snapdragon 855 SoC, Triple Camera and 6.1 Inch OLED Display
Last year, Sony launched its Sony Xperia 1, a high-end smartphone that, beyond its specifications, shone on its 21: 9 screen. Now, the company returns to the IFA in Berlin to show its new Sony Xperia 5 (neither 2, nor 3, nor 4), a high-end mobile that collects the witness of its predecessor in terms of design and adds some interesting functions in the photographic section.
Summing up its datasheet, the Sony Xperia 5 has a 21: 9 OLED panel somewhat smaller than the Sony Xperia 1, the Snapdragon 855 processor and three rear cameras that drink from the technologies found in Sony Alpha cameras. It will be available from October, so while we wait for it to arrive, let's see what it has to offer.
The 21: 9 screen remains the protagonist
We start, as always, by the aesthetic section, where we find certain similarities with the Sony Xperia 1. The back comes in blue, black, gray and red and is completely smooth, except for the rear camera module that now moves from the central axis to the upper left corner. Above it is the LED flash and, as we saw in the previous model.
There is no fingerprint reader since the Sony Xperia 5 returns with a side sensor. We can find it on the right edge of the device, right between the volume and power buttons. Note that both the back and the screen are protected by Gorilla Glass 6 and that it has IP65 / IP68 certification.
The Sony Xperia 5 baby of its predecessor in some aspects, but it has become more compact.
So we talk about the screen, which is somewhat smaller than in the previous model, although it maintains that peculiar aspect ratio 21: 9 that we have also seen in other devices such as the Motorola One Vision. We are facing a 6.1-inch OLED panel with FullHD + resolution that takes advantage of much of the front, although Sony again boasts of upper and lower frames.
The screen is still compatible with X1 technology (which we know of Bravia TVs) and, in the words of the brand, serves to "increase contrast, color, and sharpness". It has 10-bit tonal gradients to offer more intense blacks and is compatible with ITU-R BT.2020 and DCI-P3 color space.
And now that we talk about the screen, it is worth mentioning the sound. Sony has implemented Dolby Atmos and adjusted it in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment to take advantage of stereo speakers. Add to this the audio technologies of Sony and DSEE HX, a system to improve the sharpness of music files.
Performance
We start talking about performance, where Sony has opted for an engine that we already know about the Sony Xperia 1. The Japanese firm reintroduces the Snapdragon 855 (not the Plus model ) on its flagship, an SoC that we have seen in all the range High this year (except Huawei and international Samsung). It is a seven-nanometer processor with eight cores, four at 1.8 GHz, three at 2.4 GHz and one at 2.8 GHz. The GPU is none other than the Adreno 640, so in terms of power there is no There should be problems.
For gaming, the Sony Xperia 5 will be compatible with the PlayStation 4 Dualshock 4.
As its successor already did, the Sony Xperia 5 mounts 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. The operating system is Android 9 Pie (expected to update sooner than later to Android 10) and the battery is 3,140 mAh compatible with fast charging via USB PD (Power Delivery).
In terms of connectivity, the Sony Xperia 5 arrives with the integrated X24 LTE modem, which allows Gigabit LTE connectivity. Includes 4x4 MIMO and NFC, for those who like to pay with the mobile. Something interesting is "Smart Connectivity", a system that uses the Sony phone learning engine to analyze the WiFi network, predict connectivity problems and switch to LTE if necessary.
Strong commitment to photography
We end up reviewing the photographic section. Sony has implemented three rear lenses in its new Sony Xperia 5 and the BIONZ X engine for mobiles (BIONZ X is the engine of Sony Alpha cameras). The three sensors are 12 megapixels and each one fulfills a function: there is a main sensor of 26 mm, a wide angle of 16 mm and a telephoto lens equivalent to 35 mm. The main sensor has 1.4-micron pixels, a Dual Photo Diode image sensor, and an f / 1.6 aperture. All sensors have OIS.
Beyond resolution, the interesting thing is in technology. Sony has introduced the first Eye AF (autofocus of eyes) on a smartphone. It is understood by its name, but it is a system that follows the eyes of the subjects to always keep them in focus and, as in the Sony Alpha, help in the focus of portraits. You can take up to 10 photos per second with tracking.
If you have a Sony Alpha or Cyber-shot camera, you can transfer the images from the camera to your mobile using the Imaging Edge Mobile application
We see CineAlta technology again, only improved. Several projects with different configurations can be created, allows more options when modifying the white balance, manual focus and audio recording levels and, as a curious implementation, clips can be cut and mounted on the fly. Also, "Photography Advice" has been introduced, whose purpose is to notify the user that the finger is placed on the lens or that someone has their eyes closed.
Versions and price of Sony Xperia 5
Sony has not revealed the different versions and the price of its new flagship but has made it known that the device will go on sale from 4th October 2019 for 799 euros or 880 dollars. It can be booked as of today in some selected markets and will arrive with WF-1000XM3 wireless headphones included.
